Perhaps New York's most notable speakeasy turned restaurant, the "21" Club is a veritable New York institution. Originally founded by Jack Kriendler and Charlie Berns, 21 is best known for its secret wine cellar, and for its inventive way of hiding and destroying liquor during police raids in Prohibition-era Manhattan. In fact, one of 21's most famous guests, former New York Mayor Jimmy Walker, had his own room in the wine cellar during the 1920s so that he could imbibe while federal agents checked the restaurant for contraband liquor. Because this room wasn't technically part of the restaurant at the time -- it was part of 19 W. 52nd and rented separately by the restaurant, which is located at 21 W. 52nd -- Walker figured, 'No harm, no foul!' With guests like Walker, one can't help but wonder what scenes have unfolded at 21. If its walls could speak, they'd no doubt tell a riveting tale. In fact, their story's still being written, as contemporary guests range from celebrities to sports figures to business luminaries -- most of whom have their own favorite table, and many of whom have donated a toy to the collection of gifts that's suspended from the ceiling of 21's legendary bar room. If you can't figure out which toys came from which noted patrons, try focusing instead on the jockeys that stand watch over 21 outside the wrought iron gates of the townhouse in which it's located. Some of the most impressive horse owners and breeders in the country have donated them. There's even one donated in honor of Secretariat -- America's most famous race horse. With so much nostalgia and so many power brokers eating there, it's no wonder that in the 1980s Forbes magazine called 21 the place that "more deals were done than on the stock market floor." Every president since FDR has visited, with the exception of George W. Bush (George, we know you like hamburgers; you can even try the hash, which is heavenly, although it's not prepared Texas style!). Still not enticed? We almost forgot to mention: The food's pretty special, too! So take the small steps down through the wrought iron gates that were transplanted from the original owner's previous establishment, then go through the brass and glass doorway and prepare to have a fun time with fabulous food!
